  • Teaching Style
    • I like to engage students by asking questions about the subject at hand and designing activities that cause them to research and discuss a topic. I like to share as many tips, techniques and ideas with the students as possible, while simplifying or breaking down complex ideas. My desire is not just to address the course objectives but to share a passion for the subject at hand with the students, so that they can carry on with their exploration of the subject beyond the life of the course. I do not consider myself an authority on anything, but I do everything possible in my power to learn everything I can about the subject at hand. I also focus on relating everything in a course to the real world and to our daily lives. I do not believe in emphasizing exams, but instead place more weight on the week-by-week submissions.
    • I challenge students with new ideas and a fair amount of work. I value work ethic, creativity, and the process of arriving at an answer, sometimes even more so than the final result. I use no PowerPoints and instead use discussion and hands-on work to get the point across. The word "education" comes from "educare" in Latin, and it apparently means to "bring out what is within". To me a good teacher does not place new knowledge into a student; instead, they bring out what is already present in the student. It is my job to be an igniter and catalyst, and it is the student's job to show up and do the best they can.
  • Interests and hobbies
    • Meditation, hiking, running, swimming, Latin Jazz, world politics, independent movies, international movies and vegetarian ethnic food.
